How this is calculated
gross profit = revenue - cost of goodsnet profit = gross profit - operating expensesgross margin = gross profit / revenuebreakeven units = operating expenses / (unit price - variable unit cost)
What it assumes
- One period at a time. Mixing a quarter's expenses with a month's revenue is the usual way this goes wrong.
- Cost of goods is what varies with each sale; operating expenses are what you pay whether or not you sell anything.
- Your own pay is an operating expense. If you leave it out, the profit figure is fiction.
- Tax is not modelled.
Worked example
In: $10,000 revenue, $4,000 cost of goods, $3,000 operating expenses, $25 unit price, $10 variable cost
Out: gross profit $6,000 (60%), net profit $3,000 (30%), breakeven at 200 units
